On Aug. 8, country music sensation Billy Dean chatted via phone about his use of Viddy, as well as his forthcoming album “A Man of Good Fortune,” which is expected to be released on Sept. 25.

Throughout his career in country music, Billy Dean has sold over six million records and thirteen of his songs landed in the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot Country Charts including the poignant “Let Them Be Little,” “Billy the Kid,” “Somewhere In My Broken Heart” and “Only Here for a Little White.” In 1992, he was crowned “Top New Male Vocalist” by the Academy of Country Music (ACM). In 2000, Billy Dean and Alison Krauss sang harmony vocals on Kenny Rogers’ rendition of “Buy Me a Rose.”

He noted that he stays connected with his fans via his Viddy page, which is a social network that is a combination of YouTube with Twitter. Viddy, a booming iPhone app that has surpassed 40 million registered users, allows users to upload short, 15-second videos, add special effects like filters and music, and publish them through the app to share with friends and followers. The latest version is available for a free download in the Apple App Store.

Along with Taylor Swift and Julie Roberts, he is one of the few country singers that connects with this fans using Viddy. “The first 1,000 followers we got on Viddy came a lot quicker than it took on Facebook and Twitter. It seems to accelerate your exposure. My age group of fans is the fastest-growing group of people joining Facebook and now I need to convince them that Viddy is not very complicated. It’s easy on my part since I need to take a fifteen second clip and post it. It does not involve typing so I do not need to worry about the amount of text or characters. It’s doing really well and it’s just another tool in this day and age that independent artists need to get more savvy about it in terms of social marketing because this is what companies and booking agents are looking at these days,” Dean remarked.

Billy Dean noted that touring with Kenny Rogers was one of his most precious times in his country music career. “Touring with Kenny was very special for me,” Dean said.

Regarding his forthcoming CD “A Man of Good Fortune,” he stated, “We are releasing a new album of ten new songs. This record sounds young, but the lyrics are for grown-ups.”
